This place needs no introduction…. seriously… If you’re within 30 miles of downtown Pensacola, just do yourself a favor and find your way to McGuire’s. If you’re not familiar, it’s on Gregory Street in downtown Pensacola, but there is also a location in Destin across from Harborwalk Village.
The place is huge (20,000 sq-ft) and was once a firehouse in the ’20s. They brew their own beer (and root beer), trim their own steaks, smoke their own meats, etc.
Nikki ordered the shepherd’s pie ($16.99). I had never had it… I had it described to me years ago and I thought it sounded gross, so I stayed away. I’ve since become a lot more adventurous, and now I realize why people like this stuff. It’s delicious, although I don’t see myself ordering it anywhere but McGuire’s.
Although we were heading home, technically we were still on vacation. And I had been wanting steak, so I opted for the filet mignon ($29.99) and house-made root beer. Until writing this just now, I was under the impression that this cut was certified USDA Prime. But after a little research, I realize it’s not… That being said, this was one of the best steaks both of us have ever had. Tender, flavorful, everything a steak is supposed to be.
For dessert we split a bread pudding ($4.25). It’s homemade and sits in an Irish whiskey sauce. I can’t say definitively it was the best I’ve had, but… more than likely.
(I apologize for the lack of good pictures. The lighting is not ideal.)
There are so many cool and iconic things about McGuire’s, aside from having some of the most consistently good food on the Gulf Coast. The gift shop, the dollar bills stapled to the wall and ceiling, the moose head, the Grand Hall banquet room, even the bathrooms… If you’ve been, you know what I mean. If you haven’t, we highly recommend you check it out.
